Maintenance Tip: Check Out "Houghton on Quenching"
Quenching is the rapid cooling of a metal or an alloy from a suitable elevated temperature. This is usually accomplished by immersion in water, oil, or an aqueous polymer solution although forced air, still air, or molten baths are sometimes used. The main commercial use of quenching is the cooling of quench-hardenable steels to develop an acceptable microstructure with mechanical properties to suit in service requirements.
Because managing fluid quench systems is becoming increasingly more complex due to changes in the formulations, environmental concerns and changing applications, Houghton has published a complete guide to quench methods, fluid selection and troubleshooting in a downloadable document entitled "Houghton on Quenching."
