Quenching is the rapid cooling of a metal or an alloy from a suitable elevated temperature. This is usually accomplished by immersion in water, oil, or an aqueous polymer solution although forced air, still air, or molten baths are sometimes used. The main commercial use of quenching is the cooling of quench-hardenable steels to develop an acceptable microstructure with mechanical properties to suit in service requirements. Because managing fluid quench systems is becoming increasing more complex due to changes in the formulations, environmental concerns and changing applications, Houghton has published a complete guide to quench methods, fluid selection and troubleshooting in a downloadable document entitled “Houghton on Quenching.” Follow this link to download your complete guide: http://www.houghtonintl.com/images/Hougton%20on%20quenching.pdf Pages 60-73 contain a valuable chart of problems and solutions for many process issues. The guide is current, comprehensive and a free download – check it out. About Houghton International Inc. The latest design, materials and equipment specifications should be obtained from the company before any reliance is placed on the enclosed since changes may occur due to product improvement. |
